UAE Embassy Attestation Requirements by Country (2026)

How do embassy attestation requirements differ by country?

Embassy attestation varies significantly by country. India: via the UAE Embassy’s appointed application centre (3-5 days; an official fee applies). Philippines uses a DFA apostille (the old Red Ribbon was abolished in 2019). UK uses an FCDO apostille as the home step. For UAE-bound US documents, the US Department of State issues an authentication certificate (the issuing state Secretary of State handles corporate documents). Each country has different timelines, fees, and prerequisite steps before the embassy stage.

India: UAE Embassy Route

Indian documents are processed through the UAE Embassy’s appointed application centre in India. The chain is: state HRD/university verification → MEA authentication → UAE Embassy attestation (the mission does not publish a fixed turnaround). The application centres operate in major Indian cities. An official fee applies per document.

Philippines: DFA Apostille (Red Ribbon Abolished)

Philippine documents are authenticated by the DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs) Office of Consular Affairs, which has issued apostilles only since 14 May 2019 — the old Red Ribbon was abolished. Educational certificates need verification from CHED (Commission on Higher Education) or DepEd first. Because the UAE is not a Hague member, the DFA apostille serves only as the home-country authentication: the document must then be attested by the UAE Embassy in Manila and finally by MOFA in the UAE. The UAE Embassy in Manila publishes a processing time of at least three to five working days for its attestation service.

Hague Convention Countries (UK, USA, Australia, etc.)

For documents from Hague Convention member countries, an apostille is issued by that country's competent authority — the UK uses the FCDO Legalisation Office (official fee, online), the USA uses the Secretary of State in the issuing state (official fee applies), Australia uses DFAT (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade), and France, Germany, and most EU countries have their own apostille authorities. Important: because the UAE is not a Hague member, an apostille never replaces the UAE Embassy step for UAE-bound documents. In apostille-only countries such as the UK, the apostille itself serves as the home-country authentication; dual-track countries issue their non-apostille product for UAE-bound documents instead — the US Department of State issues an authentication certificate, as does Australia's DFAT. Either way, the UAE Embassy in that country then attests the document and MOFA completes the final attestation in the UAE.

Why Every Country Uses the Full Chain for the UAE

Regardless of a country's Hague status, every foreign document used in the UAE follows the traditional full attestation chain: home country → UAE Embassy → MOFA. This is because the UAE is not a Hague member, so an apostille is never accepted for UAE use. Countries such as Egypt, Qatar, Lebanon, Sri Lanka, and Nigeria are not Hague members at all, so their documents use this chain for all international use; countries such as India, Pakistan, China, and Saudi Arabia are Hague members, but their documents still require the full chain for the UAE specifically. Each country has its own prerequisite authentication steps before the UAE Embassy will process the document, and processing times and fees vary significantly. Our embassy attestation guide maps every corridor and routes you to the right chain.

UAE Embassy Attestation Requirements by Country (2026) — FAQ

Apostille is used between Hague Convention member countries — over 125 of them, including the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, India, Pakistan, China, Saudi Arabia, and most EU nations. Countries such as Egypt, Qatar, Lebanon, Sri Lanka, and Nigeria are not members and always use traditional embassy attestation. Note that for documents used in the UAE, apostille never applies — the UAE is not a member, so all foreign documents use the full embassy attestation chain regardless of the origin country.
