UAE Embassy Attestation — Which Embassy Attests Your Document, Where & In What Order
What is the procedure of attestation from the UAE embassy?
UAE embassy attestation is the step where a UAE embassy or consulate legalises a document so the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) can apply the final attestation. For a foreign document, the procedure runs in the document's issuing country: the local authorities authenticate it, that country's foreign ministry attests it, the UAE embassy there legalises it, and MOFA in the UAE finishes the chain. It does not usually happen at your home country's embassy in Dubai — that in-UAE step applies only on specific corridors, such as Indian certificates. Because the UAE is not a Hague country, an apostille never replaces this chain. AttestPort runs the whole sequence with doorstep pickup and delivery — your documents travel, you do not.
About Embassy Attestation
Embassy attestation is the most misunderstood link in the UAE legalisation chain, because the phrase covers two different things: the UAE embassy abroad legalising a document in its issuing country — the standard step in the inbound chain — and, on a few corridors, a home country's own embassy or consulate here in the UAE attesting its nationals' documents. Getting the sense wrong sends documents to the wrong building in the wrong country. This page is the router: it explains where the embassy step actually sits in each direction, which corridor your document belongs to, and links every country's dedicated page for the specifics. AttestPort handles the full chain for documents from countries across the world — collected from and returned to your door in Dubai.
The Two Senses of Embassy Attestation — Which One Do You Need?
Ask three people what embassy attestation means and you will get two different answers. The first sense — the one the UAE's official chain is built on — is the UAE embassy or consulate abroad: MOFA's own guidance is that a foreign document is attested by the foreign ministry of its issuing country and then by the UAE embassy or consulate in that country, before MOFA in the UAE will touch it. The second sense is a home country's own embassy or consulate here in the UAE attesting its nationals' documents — real, but corridor-specific: MOFA's published inbound chain does not include it, and it applies only where a mission offers it, most prominently for Indian certificates.
The distinction matters because each mission also enforces territorial jurisdiction: a document goes to the UAE mission in its own issuing country — the UAE Embassy in London, for instance, handles documents issued in the UK and Iceland and directs everything else to the UAE consulate in the relevant country. If someone promises to get your French degree attested at an embassy counter in Dubai, the right question is: which embassy, in which sense, and says who?
Where the Embassy Step Sits in the Inbound Chain
For a foreign document coming INTO the UAE, the chain runs in a fixed order: the issuing country's competent authority verifies the document, that country's foreign ministry attests it, the UAE embassy or consulate in that country legalises it, and MOFA applies the final attestation once the document reaches the UAE. Every link matters — MOFA's guidance is blunt that submissions with missing prior attestations are rejected.
The embassy step is therefore neither the beginning nor the end: it sits between the origin country's own authentication and the final MOFA stamp, and it is the link that makes the chain international. Our certificate attestation guide covers the full chain end to end, and MOFA attestation has its own dedicated page for the final step.
The Other Direction — UAE Documents Going Abroad
The outbound chain INVERTS the order, and mixing the two directions up is the single most common error on this topic. A UAE-issued document going abroad is attested by MOFA first; only then will the destination country's embassy or consulate in the UAE legalise it — the foreign missions in Dubai and Abu Dhabi say so themselves, requiring UAE documents to arrive already MOFA-attested. In the outbound flow, and only there, MOFA also auto-assigns an accredited UAE mission when the destination has no direct UAE embassy of its own.
So a home-country embassy in the UAE does have a standard role — mostly in the OUTBOUND direction, legalising UAE documents headed to its country. That is precisely why presenting it as the standard INBOUND step, as much of the internet does, sends people to the wrong counter.
Why an Apostille Never Replaces the Embassy Step
The UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille on its own is never accepted for UAE use — from any country, however senior its apostille authority. The clearest proof comes from a UAE mission itself: the UAE Embassy in Manila requires Philippine documents to carry the DFA apostille and then attests on top of it. In apostille-only countries the apostille IS the origin-country step — the first link, never a substitute for the embassy and MOFA links that follow.
Where a country issues both instruments, the UAE-bound route usually takes the non-apostille product: an authentication certificate in the USA and Australia, a certificate of authentication from Ontario. The details live on our apostille services page and each corridor page.
Your Corridor — the Country-by-Country Router
Every corridor has its own instruments, prerequisites and quirks — that is what the dedicated country pages are for. The one-line versions:
- India — State authorities and MEA attestation first; then the UAE mission in India or, for many certificates, the Indian mission in the UAE (both routes recognised, per the Indian Embassy).
- Philippines — DFA authentication in Manila is the origin step; the UAE Embassy Manila attests on top of the DFA apostille.
- UK — the FCDO apostille is the origin step; a UK apostille alone is never enough for the UAE.
- USA — a US Department of State authentication for personal and educational documents; corporate documents route through the issuing state.
- Canada — origin authentication with an Ontario exception: Ontario issues a certificate of authentication, not an apostille.
- Australia — DFAT issues the authentication for UAE-bound documents, not the apostille.
- Egypt — the traditional chain end to end; no apostille shortcut exists.
- Jordan — the traditional chain, in both directions.
- Lebanon — the traditional chain via the authorities in Beirut and the UAE mission there.
- Sri Lanka — the traditional chain via Colombo; a corridor we handle end to end.
More Corridors With Dedicated Pages
Dedicated corridor pages also cover Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Poland, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Greece, Switzerland, Denmark, Russia, China, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Nigeria and the BVI — each with that corridor's instrument, chain and documents.
The Corridors With an In-UAE Embassy Step
Three corridors deserve the fine print. For Indian educational certificates — the mission also attests civil documents such as marriage and birth certificates — the Indian Embassy's own guidance is that the UAE authorities require attestation by the Indian Embassy or Consulate in the UAE before MOFA — with the UAE-mission route in New Delhi or Mumbai equally accepted where MEA attestation was completed first. The Indian mission publishes same-day service for its attestation counters; the delivery channel around it has changed several times, so we confirm the current arrangement at the time of filing. The Indian Consulate in Dubai page covers the details.
For Philippine documents, the corridor standard runs through Manila; the Philippine mission in the UAE offers its own presence-based authentication services for specific needs, and our Philippine Consulate Dubai page explains when each applies.
No UAE Embassy in Your Country?
It happens more often than people expect, and there is an official answer: MOFA's guidance for documents from countries with no UAE mission is to contact the Ministry through its contact centre or the Contact Us page, and its FAQ speaks of attesting at the closest UAE embassy or consulate — meaning a UAE mission in a nearby country may be designated for your documents. Which mission that is depends on the country, so confirm with MOFA — or send us the document details on WhatsApp and we will run the confirmation and the chain for you.
Country Not Listed? The Pattern Still Applies
We process documents from many corridors that do not have a dedicated page here. The pattern is always the same: origin-country authentication, that country's foreign ministry, the UAE mission responsible for that country, then MOFA in the UAE — with the corridor's own instruments and quirks layered on top. Send us the document type and issuing country and we will map the exact chain, whatever the country.
Does Every Document Need the Embassy Step?
Most documents intended for official use in the UAE do — but not literally all, and the exceptions are specific. Commercial invoices and certificates of origin never go through the ordinary attestation service at all: MOFA routes them through its separate eDAS commercial channel, where certificates of origin for GCC-manufactured goods are uploaded but not attested — our commercial document attestation page covers when this applies. And attestation is no longer a prerequisite for higher-education recognition — a purpose-level change many guides have missed. When someone tells you everything must be embassy-attested, the accurate version is: most things, for most purposes, with published exceptions.
Timelines — What the Missions Actually Publish
Honest answer: only some missions publish turnarounds, and where they do not, nobody can promise one. Among the figures missions publish (as of July 2026): the UAE Embassy in London quotes up to five working days for posted documents, the UAE Embassy in Canberra completes most digital requests in two to three business days, and the UAE Embassy in Manila quotes at least three to five working days. On the in-UAE side, the Indian mission publishes same-day service for its attestation counters. Origin-country steps swing widest of all — a US federal authentication runs to several weeks by mail.
Treat any provider's flat per-embassy day-count table with suspicion: where a mission publishes nothing, a number is a guess. We quote corridor-specific, honestly-sourced timelines before we start.
Fees and Status Checks — the Honest Version
Every mission sets its own attestation fees, MOFA's final step has its own fee tiers, and commercial documents carry a different tier from personal ones — the structures are published, the totals depend entirely on your document and corridor, and we price the complete journey up front: request an instant quote before anything is filed.
On tracking: the MOFA leg is verifiable — a MOFA-attested document carries a reference that checks out on MOFA's official verification service. The embassy legs have no universal tracker; where a mission provides a reference-number lookup we use it, and either way we track your file through the channel it was filed in and keep you updated on WhatsApp.
Doorstep Handling — With One Honest Exception
The reason this chain suits doorstep service is simple: documents travel, people do not. Origin-country steps are completed through the authorities and the UAE mission there — by courier and local handling, while you stay in Dubai. The MOFA leg runs digitally or by approved courier. The one honest exception: a few in-UAE mission counters require the applicant in person, and where that applies we say so and prepare everything around your visit. Everything else: collected from your door, returned to your door.
Documents Required
- Original document with the issuing country’s prior authentications already applied (we can arrange these too)
- Passport copy of the document holder
- Emirates ID copy (if already in the UAE)
- Mission-specific application forms (we prepare these)
- Photographs (required by some missions)
- Corridor-specific extras — confirmed for your country before we start
How Embassy Attestation Works
Corridor Check
WhatsApp us your document type and issuing country. We confirm which chain applies — the UAE mission abroad, an in-UAE step, or both — and quote the full journey.
Origin-Country Authentication
The document is authenticated in its issuing country: the competent local authority first, then that country's foreign ministry — MEA, FCDO, the US Department of State, DFAT, DFA and their counterparts.
UAE Embassy Legalisation
The UAE embassy or consulate in the issuing country legalises the authenticated document — the canonical embassy step. An apostille never replaces it.
MOFA Attestation
MOFA applies the final attestation in the UAE — physical documents move by approved courier.
Doorstep Delivery
We handle the file through the chain, send updates on WhatsApp, and deliver the finished document back to your door.
Processing Time
Each leg has its own clock and only some missions publish one — from same-day service at certain counters to several weeks where an origin authority is slow. We quote an honest, corridor-specific timeline before we start; no single total covers every country.

Embassy Attestation — Frequently Asked Questions
The procedure runs in the document's issuing country: the local competent authority authenticates the document, that country's foreign ministry attests it, the UAE embassy or consulate in that country legalises it, and MOFA applies the final attestation in the UAE. It does not usually happen at your home country's embassy in Dubai — that in-UAE step is corridor-specific, such as for Indian certificates. A valid chain needs every link: MOFA rejects submissions with missing prior attestations. AttestPort runs the whole sequence with doorstep pickup and delivery.
