Certificate Attestation Services in Dubai & UAE — All Document Types
What is certificate attestation for the UAE?
Certificate attestation for the UAE is the official process of confirming that the signatures and seals on a document are genuine, so it can be legally used inside the country — for employment and family visas, education, licensing or business setup. Because the UAE is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, a document issued abroad must complete the full legalisation chain — authentication in the country of origin, legalisation by the UAE embassy or consulate there, and a final attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) — and an apostille on its own is never enough. Attestation only proves a document is authentic; it is a separate step from qualification recognition, which for higher education is handled through the MoHESR University Certificates Recognition service, and from professional licensing, which relies on primary-source verification rather than the applicant attesting their own certificate.
About Certificate Attestation
Certificate attestation is the official process that makes a foreign document legally usable in the UAE — a chain of government checks confirming that the signatures and seals on your certificate are genuine. Without it, a degree, marriage certificate, birth certificate or company document issued abroad has no legal standing here, and any visa, enrolment, licence or company registration that depends on it will be refused. AttestPort handles the entire chain end to end — we collect your original document anywhere in Dubai, complete every step from home-country authentication through the UAE embassy to the final MOFA attestation, and deliver it back to your door.
Why the UAE requires certificate attestation
A foreign-issued document has no automatic legal status in the UAE. Attestation is how the UAE government satisfies itself that a certificate is real before it is used for anything official, so the requirement follows you into almost every major milestone as an expat.
You will be asked for attested documents when you apply for a work permit through MOHRE, when you sponsor a spouse or child on a family visa, when you apply for a Golden Visa, when you enrol a child in school or yourself at university, when you sit for professional licensing, when you register a company, and when you complete a property transaction. Submit an unattested foreign certificate and the application is simply refused — attestation is not optional paperwork, it is the gate everything else passes through. Attestation also resurfaces at renewal time — not usually for a document already attested, but whenever a document has changed or expired.
- Employment — MOHRE requires attested educational certificates before a skilled-worker permit is issued
- Family sponsorship — attested marriage and birth certificates to sponsor a spouse or children
- Golden Visa — an attested or officially recognised qualification for the talent and specialist categories (a foreign degree is typically recognised through MoHESR; a UAE degree is attested)
- Education — attested degrees, transcripts and school transfer certificates for enrolment
- Professional licensing — attested qualifications for many regulated professions
- Business setup — attested commercial documents to register a company or a branch office
Attestation vs apostille: why an apostille alone is never enough for the UAE
This is the single most misunderstood point in UAE document processing, and getting it wrong guarantees a rejection. The UAE is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. That means an apostille — the single certificate that Hague member states accept from one another — is never sufficient on its own for a document used inside the UAE, even when your document was issued in a Hague country such as the UK, the USA, Australia, Canada, France or Germany.
Whatever the country of origin, a document bound for the UAE must complete the full consular legalisation chain: it is authenticated in the country of issue, then legalised by the UAE embassy or consulate there, and finally attested by MOFA in the UAE. An apostille only replaces this chain when both the origin and destination countries are Hague members and neither is the UAE — for example, a UK document used in Germany. For any document being used inside the UAE, always plan for the full attestation chain, and treat any advice that an apostille alone will do as a red flag.
Apostille and attestation are therefore related but not interchangeable. If your document was issued in a Hague country, obtaining the apostille is simply how the home-country step is completed before it moves on to UAE embassy attestation and the final MOFA step.
Documents issued abroad vs issued inside the UAE — two different routes
Attestation runs in two directions, and confusing them causes avoidable delays. For a document issued abroad that you want to use in the UAE, you follow the inbound chain described above: home-country authentication, UAE embassy or consulate legalisation, and final MOFA attestation. This is the route most expats need.
For a document issued inside the UAE that you want to use in another country, the direction reverses: MOFA attests the UAE document first, and then the embassy or consulate of the destination country here in the UAE legalises it. The UAE does not issue apostilles, so a UAE-issued certificate is never apostilled — even when the destination is a Hague member state. If you are unsure which direction applies to you, tell us the document and where it will be used and we will map the exact route.
Which documents can be attested
The UAE requires attestation for virtually every category of foreign-issued document. Each document type has its own dedicated route, but they all fall into three families — educational, personal and commercial.
- Educational — degree certificate attestation, diplomas, transcript attestation, marksheets and school transfer certificates, used for work permits, licensing and enrolment
- Personal — birth certificate attestation, marriage certificate attestation, divorce and death certificates, police clearance certificates and experience certificate attestation
- Commercial — commercial document attestation covering trade licences, articles of association, board resolutions, certificates of incorporation and powers of attorney
Attestation, equivalency, recognition and licensing — how they differ
Attestation proves a document is authentic. It does not, by itself, mean your qualification is recognised or that you are licensed to practise — those are separate processes that people routinely confuse.
For higher-education qualifications, recognition is handled by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research through its University Certificates Recognition service. Importantly, the current system no longer requires you to attest a previous degree before it can be recognised — recognition and attestation are now separate steps. School-level certificates are different: equivalency of a Grade 12 or school transfer certificate is handled by the Ministry of Education and still requires the certificate to be attested first. Our certificate equivalency and recognition service explains which path applies to you.
Professional licensing is different again. Healthcare regulators such as DHA, DOH and MOHAP rely on primary-source verification — they confirm your credentials directly with the institution that issued them, rather than accepting a certificate you have attested yourself. So a nurse, doctor or pharmacist may need attestation for their visa and MoHESR recognition of their qualification, while the licence itself rests on primary-source verification.
How long certificate attestation takes
There is no single honest number for a process that spans dozens of countries, because the steps that take the most time happen abroad and vary enormously from one country to the next. Instead, think of the timeline in three stages.
The home-country authentication stage is the most variable — it depends on the issuing authority and the country, and it dominates the total. The UAE embassy or consulate legalisation stage abroad is also country-dependent. The final MOFA step in the UAE is the fastest and most predictable: for a document arriving through the foreign chain, MOFA typically finishes the approved-courier route in roughly one to three business days. (The fully digital two-hour route is for eligible documents issued inside the UAE, not for a foreign certificate.)
Because the first two stages vary so widely, we give a realistic, corridor-specific estimate once we know your document and country of origin rather than quote a single figure that could not be true for everyone. See our country attestation guides for how each corridor behaves.
What certificate attestation costs
Attestation is not a single charge. An official fee is levied at each stage — by the authority in the country of issue, by the UAE embassy or consulate there, and by MOFA in the UAE — and MOFA charges a higher official fee for commercial documents than for personal ones. Because those charges are set by different governments and vary by document type and country, no honest provider can quote one universal price that holds across every combination.
Rather than publish a figure that would be wrong for most people, we confirm exactly which fees apply to your specific documents and give you a clear, itemised quote up front with no surprises. Message us for an instant quote for your case.
How to check that an attested document is genuine
Document fraud exists, so the UAE lets anyone verify a MOFA attestation for free. MOFA-attested digital documents carry a machine-readable verification feature — a QR code, barcode or reference number — that links directly to the record in MOFA's database.
To check a document, scan the QR code with your phone camera, or enter the reference number through MOFA's official verification service (verify.mofa.gov.ae) or the UAE Pass Document Verification feature. If the reference number, date and document type on screen match the physical document, the attestation is genuine; if the check returns no record, treat the document with caution. Our MOFA attestation service covers the whole final step and returns your document with a verifiable stamp.
Common reasons attestation is rejected — and how to avoid them
Most rejections come down to a handful of avoidable issues. We pre-check every document before submission so problems are caught before they cost you time.
- Laminated documents — authorities need to inspect the original paper and seal, so a laminated certificate is refused; request an unlaminated original
- Wrong language — a document in neither Arabic nor English needs an MOJ-certified legal translation before it can be attested
- Name mismatches — differences between the certificate and the passport must be explained or corrected before submission
- An incomplete chain — skipping the home-country or embassy step means MOFA will not attest the document
- Photocopies instead of originals — stamps are applied to the original; scans and copies cannot be attested, though a properly notarised true copy is accepted where the rules allow it
Our doorstep pickup and delivery — and when you must attend in person
Doorstep collection and delivery is what we are built around. For a standard attestation you never need to visit a government office: we collect your original document anywhere in Dubai, run the full chain, keep you updated on WhatsApp, and deliver the attested document back to your door.
Honesty matters here, because a few services genuinely require your physical presence and no provider can remove that. A power of attorney attestation needs you to sign before a notary in person. For those we handle everything around the one step that has to be you — so you still save the queuing and the follow-up, we are simply clear about the part the law reserves for you.
Legal translation when your document is not in Arabic or English
MOFA accepts documents in Arabic or English. If your certificate is in any other language, it must be accompanied by a translation from a legal translator licensed by the UAE Ministry of Justice before it can be attested — an ordinary translation is not accepted. We coordinate MOJ-certified legal translation alongside the attestation so the two steps stay in sync and nothing is rejected for a language issue.
Certificate attestation by country
The home-country step differs from one corridor to the next — some countries issue an apostille as their home-country authentication, others issue a named authentication or attestation certificate — but every corridor still ends with UAE embassy legalisation and the final MOFA step. We handle documents from countries across the world; these are the corridors we are asked about most.
- Indian embassy attestation — for degrees, marksheets and personal documents from India
- UK embassy attestation — for FCDO-apostilled documents from the United Kingdom
- USA embassy attestation — for federally or state-authenticated US documents
- Canada embassy attestation — for GAC or provincially authenticated Canadian documents
- Australia embassy attestation — for DFAT-authenticated Australian documents
- Philippines embassy attestation — for DFA-authenticated Philippine documents
Documents Required
- Original certificate or document to be attested (must not be laminated)
- Passport copy of the certificate holder
- Emirates ID copy (if already in the UAE)
- Previous attestation stamps (if this is a re-attestation)
- MOJ-certified legal translation (if the document is not in Arabic or English)

Doorstep Document Collection
Our representative collects your original documents from your home, office or any location across Dubai — you never need to visit an office for a standard attestation.
Home-Country Authentication
Your documents are verified in the country of issue by the relevant authority — education ministry, foreign affairs department, notary or apostille authority (MEA, FCDO, US Department of State, DFAT, GAC and others).
UAE Embassy or Consulate Legalisation
The UAE Embassy or Consulate in the country of issue legalises the authenticated document. Because the UAE is not a Hague member, this step is required even for documents from apostille countries — an apostille does not replace it.
MOFA Attestation
Final attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs — the step that makes the document valid across every emirate — completed through the official mofa.gov.ae route using UAE Pass.
Doorstep Delivery
Your fully attested documents are delivered back to your location in Dubai, ready to submit to any UAE authority.
Processing Time
The final MOFA step is quick — about one to three business days by approved courier for a foreign document (eligible UAE-issued digital documents can be done in around two hours). The full timeline depends on your document type and country of origin, because the home-country and embassy steps happen abroad and vary widely, so ask us for an estimate for your specific case.
