Digital attestation for US documents — do you still need originals?

By AttestPort · Sources checked: 14 October 2026

Yes, for the digital attestation services described by the UAE consulates in New York and Houston, you still need the physical document. Both offices explicitly require it. An online application and a digitally attested result do not make these services scan-only. New York guidance; Houston guidance.

This matters when you are preparing a US-issued document for use in the UAE: check the handling mission's requirements before arranging access to the original or sending anything by courier.

What happens to the paper document?

The two consulates describe collection of the original by an approved service provider, delivery of the attested document by email, and return of the original by courier. Keep the physical document available; a scan is not a substitute for the original required by these instructions. Houston application guidance.

Before dispatch, confirm that your particular document is in the required form and that collection is available from its current location. Those checks are especially useful if the document is held by a relative, university or another office.

Does the application include MoFA attestation?

New York and Houston each describe a combined application covering their consular attestation and UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation. For those routes, a checklist should identify the combined service rather than automatically adding a further MoFA stage. Check what certifications your completed result contains. New York service description.

What about the earlier US authentication?

The digital service still has prerequisites. Houston's published instructions name US Department of State authentication for US-issued documents. New York distinguishes personal documents from business and corporate documents in its prerequisite paragraph. Their wording should not be combined into one universal route for every document. Houston prerequisites; New York prerequisites.

Ask the mission handling your application which prior authentications it requires for your exact document. Use the contact option on its linked official page. This article does not assign US states to consulates or determine an individual's eligibility.

Is this the same as eDAS 2.0?

MoFA describes its eDAS 2.0 service as digital attestation for commercial invoices and certificates of origin issued in the UAE or abroad. A US personal-document application should therefore not be directed to eDAS merely because the applicant wants digital attestation. Start with the service appropriate to the document. MoFA eDAS 2.0 service.

Four questions before you send your document

  1. 1Which mission or service will handle this document, and what prior authentication does it require?
  2. 2Which physical document or officially issued copy must I provide?
  3. 3Does this application include both the mission's and MoFA's attestations?
  4. 4What file, original or other supporting material does the organisation receiving it in the UAE want?

The practical distinction is between the document submitted, the certification performed and the result delivered. Confirming all three helps you plan the right application without assuming that “digital” removes every physical step.
